In Latin America it is considered impolite
to toss
things to each other. If you need to give
something to
a native, make sure you walk over and hand it to
them.
· Saying the word "stupid" in the English
language is
common and innocent enough. In Spanish
culture the
translation is very strong and offensive.
· Don't be offended when Latinos call you a
"gringo".
To them the word describes someone as foreign
and is not meant to degrade. The word came from
war time when American soldiers wore green
uniforms. The Mexicans knew enough to say
"green
go' in order to express their wishes for the
American
soldiers to leave.
· Latin Americans usually greet friends and
relatives
more personally than do Americans. They give
hugs,
even the men. Men usually also greet woman with
"besitos" meaning they touch cheeks while
making a kissing noise with their lips.
Woman also
greet other woman with "besitos".
These little
kisses are purely friendly and have no romantic
meaning. |

the place

Hispanic Heritage Month
September is Hispanic Heritage Month. Hispanic
Heritage begins on September 15th because
this day
marks the anniversary of independence for five
Hispanic countries - Costa Rica, El Salvador,
Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In
addition,
Mexico achieved independence on September 16th,
and Chile on September 18th. |

Workbook Now Available!
This month we released the new Spanish for Law
Enforcement workbook. The workbook contains
easy
to understand activities and real life
scenarios to learn
and practice over 400 words and phrases (100
pages) most
encountered in situations by law enforcement
personnel. The workbook can be used with the
KAMMS Audio CD program "Spanish for Law
Enforcement" or can be used independently.

"What's the best way to learn with the
Spanish on the
Job audio program?"
It is best to listen for a short time each
day. We
suggest 30 minutes or 1 lesson a day. Continue
listening to the same section until you have
mastered
it and then move on to the next. You will
need to listen
many times in order to internalize the new
language. If
you have the opportunity, we suggest
following along
with the listening guide. This way you are
"inputting"
the language both through listening and reading.
